Taleo Business Edition is a web-based talent management solution providing automated recruiting and performance management processes for small to mid-sized companies. Mental Models was brought in to assist with the product evolution in two strategic directions.

The first project focused on workforce recruiting and hiring: the objectives were to improve the usability of the existing application and create a new look and feel for the application. Mental Models’ solution incorporated Web 2.0 additions and other techniques to improve page layout and data presentation, and make it easier for users to interact with the system, e.g., find, show or hide data, take actions on data, etc. The solution was also structured to facilitate implementation of improvements incrementally over time, with several simple enhancements that could be implemented quickly to get the product evolution started and provide immediate value to users. Mental Models also provided product reskinning, including visual design and graphic icon development.

The next project involved the creation of a new module for employee performance management. The goal was to determine how to incorporate the desired new functionality into the existing application, and identify how new features could be presented to users and how users could interact with them. One key consideration was the need to aggregate ‘employee’ information, but also enable different users (employee, manager, HR) to have access to the appropriate employee-related information associated with their job function.

After working with the client to prioritize core performance functionality, Mental Models used a discovery process and Golden Thread demo to explore various approaches with the client. The final prototype showed how the existing product information architecture and page architecture could evolve to incorporate the new performance functionality, and how the performance concepts could be realized in a full-featured, easy-to-use, state-of-the-art product.
